Homework :
Homework is an essential part of your child's education. It strengths academic skills, and it helps foster student responsibility. Homework provides practice for skills and concepts taught each day and teaches children to develop positive work habits necessary for success in later grades.
Monday through Thursday, your child will have approximately 45 minutes of homework. This may vary, depending on how well they use designated class time. Homework will normally include 30 minutes of reading, a math practice page, 5 minutes of multiplication memorization (using flashcards or computer games and apps), and spelling/vocabulary. Other subject area homework may replace the normal homework based on individual or class skill development need. Homework is due the following day with the exception of spelling, which is due each Friday.
Homework is sent home in a two-pocket folder. The papers in the left pocket are for parents to read, review, and sometimes sign and return. Please help your child by establishing a routine whereby parent papers are reviewed and returned as needed or remain at home. This will ensure that all parents are informed of current and upcoming events, as well as their child's progress, in a timely fashion. Please help your child keep his/her folder organized and free of excess papers.
The right pocket of the homework folder houses your child's homework pages, Homework Assignment Sheet, and Reading Record. The Homework Assignment Sheet lists the homework for the day and should be used by your child as a check off list. Please check your child's homework for completeness, spot check if for accuracy, and initial box to the left under that day of the week. Please also initial the Reading Record as the students are responsible for reading 30 minutes per day and earning an average of 2 Accelerated Reader Points each week from Monday to Monday.
Please keep me informed regarding homework issues. If there is a legitimate reason an occasional assignment cannot be completed, please send a signed note explaining the circumstance, and it can be made up (assuming it is not a habitual occurrence). Otherwise, students will be given an opportunity to complete the missed assignment during their free time (a.k.a. recess).
